Urmila (ଊର୍ମିଳା)

ରାମାୟଣର ଜଣେ ଅନାଲୋଚିତ ଚରିତ୍ର ଊର୍ମିଳା । ଲକ୍ଷ୍ମଣଙ୍କ ପତ୍ନୀ ଊର୍ମିଳା । ପତି ଲକ୍ଷ୍ମଣ ବଡ଼ ଭାଇ ରାମଚନ୍ଦ୍ର ଓ ଭାଉଜ ସୀତାଙ୍କ ସହ ବନଗାମୀ ହେବା ପରେ ପତିଙ୍କ ଆଦେଶରେ ପତିଙ୍କୁ ଅପେକ୍ଷା କରି ରାଜଉଆସରେ ଅରଣ୍ୟର ଜୀବନ କାଟିଥିବା ଚରିତ୍ର ହେଉଛନ୍ତି ଊର୍ମିଳା । ଦୂରଦର୍ଶନରେ ରାମାନନ୍ଦ ସାଗରଙ୍କ ରାମାୟଣ ଦେଖିଥିବା ବେଳେ ଏହି ଊର୍ମିଳା ଚରିତ୍ରଟି ମୋ ମନରେ ଗଭୀର ରେଖାପାତ କରିଥିଲା । ହଠାତ୍ ଦିନେ ଲେଖିବସିଲି ଊର୍ମିଳାଙ୍କ ବିଷୟରେ । ସେତେବେଳେ ମୋ ମନରେ ଊର୍ମିଳା କୌଣସି ପୁରାଣର ଚରିତ୍ର ନଥିଲେ । ଥିଲେ କେବଳ ସାଧାରଣ ନାରୀଟିଏ । ନିଜକୁ ଊର୍ମିଳାଙ୍କ ଜାଗାରେ ରଖି ତାଙ୍କର ମାନସିକତାରେ ଗୋଟିଏ ନାରୀର ମାନସିକତାକୁ ପୁରେଇ କଲମରେ ଉତାରିଛି । (ରଶ୍ମି ରେଖା ତ୍ରିପାଠୀ)

An Overlooked Character in the Ramayana – Urmila
Urmila, the wife of Lakshmana, is one of the lesser-discussed characters in the Ramayana. When her husband Lakshmana accompanies his elder brother Ram and sister-in-law Sita into exile, Urmila, at her husband's command, remains behind in the palace. Yet, in spirit, she leads a life of renunciation, as if living in the forest herself, waiting in solitude for her husband's return.

While watching Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana on Doordarshan, Urmila’s character left a deep imprint on my mind. One day, quite suddenly, I felt the urge to write about her.

At that moment, Urmila did not appear to me as a mythological figure. She seemed like an ordinary woman—simple, human, and relatable. I placed myself in Urmila’s position, tried to feel her emotions, and entered the mindset of a woman who had made such a silent sacrifice. Through this process, I gave voice to her story with my pen.
